We did not inherit the Earth we live on from our fathers, we borrowed it from our children.

CNR

The National Research Council (CNR) carries out, promotes, disseminates, transfers and enhances research activities in the main sectors of knowledge development and their applications for scientific, technological, economic and social development. The scientific network of the CNR is organized into 7 Departments and 100 Institutes, located in most of the Italian territory.

ATTIVITA’

The activities of the Department of Earth System Sciences and Technologies for the Environment are carried out by 1300 people structured in 12 Institutes, with a total of 55 locations throughout the country, and in collaboration with Institutes belonging to other Departments, and with the support of others about 800 collaborators and staff in training.

INSTITUTES

The twelve institutes of the Department contribute to understanding the functioning of the Earth system during its long history and the growing and pervasive impact of Man during the Anthropocene, the geological epoch in which the atmosphere, the lithosphere, the biosphere, the hydrosphere and cryosphere are primarily transformed by human activity. It is necessary to know the planetary limits within which human society can operate and the mechanisms of irreversible change that can be triggered and the related reinforcement mechanisms.

The research activities of the Department are carried out by 12 Institutes with offices spread over most of the Italian territory.
