Who are we?
The European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO) is an association of countries each of which owns and operates a diverse array of marine research infrastructures at fixed locations both in the open ocean and in shelf seas (see www.emso-eu.org). EMSO represents a major asset for European marine scientists who now have a powerful tool to address pressing scientific and societal challenges. These include tracking and addressing the trends and effects of climate change, mitigating geo-hazards and assessing ecosystem structure and function.
The role
EMSO seeks a Director General who will lead this new European consortium through its initiation and first years. You will be responsible for the development of the strategic vision for this observing network in consultation with the national representatives, building strategic partnerships, promoting scientific excellence, maximising innovation opportunities and liaising with stakeholders. You will report to the board of national representatives.
The DG will be the pivotal voice of EMSO at international conferences and meetings, engaging with funding bodies, the scientific community and industry and with overall responsibility for promoting and expanding the EMSO network. You will appoint and direct the staff of the management office in Rome and will chair the Executive Committee comprising a variety of involved parties.
You will have
- Substantial depth and breadth of experience in ocean science
- A track record in the management of a significant undertaking, developing a vision, networking and building strategic partnerships;
- Outstanding skills in leadership, communication, co-ordination and public relations.
